I’m Cam/חָבִיב and I’m a GQ trans man. I’m currently a full time student, and I’m doing a fundraiser for at least something towards my top surgery. Even if this fundraiser doesn’t fulfil its goals I will be going ahead with top surgery. However, the more than can be raised through crowdfunding, the less money I will have to borrow and spend years paying back.
I have a huge amount of anxiety and dysphoria around my chest. I have been binding my chest daily for seven years, which causes me back pain and rib pain when breathing. I also have issues with carrying out the archaeological fieldwork I am required to undergo for my degree in a safe manner or a manner that doesn’t cause me pain.
While I have previously attempted to seek care on the NHS, the waiting times for surgery on the NHS, combined with the delay because of paperwork have kept pushing the deadline back. While I was told to expect top surgery in the summer of 2016, I am now being told the date will likely be towards the end of 2019 at earliest, and possibly in 2020.
What you will be funding is part of the fees for surgery and part of the surrounding costs (e.g. cost of travel). I don’t expect to be able to finance my entire top surgery through crowdfunding, so will still take out a loan. Even if I did raise the full amount, the time it would take to do so would be longer than I can deal with mental health wise. What this fundraiser is doing, however, is helping me get top surgery without going into £7k worth of debt, which would be the total cost if I were to have it in the UK. I’m currently looking into options outside the UK, but this would still be around the £4-5k mark with all costs included.

the lingering abdominal issues from that finger kicking in half my ribs has had me in the hospital six times in the last week and a half and this debt is going to destroy me. i don’t even know what to about any part of this, i’ve wracked up tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills so far and it looks like it’s gonna keep climbing.
